The market shifts towards carriers and postal operators wanting to separate hardware and software in their locker networks.
The final crucial step to your own software platform is to migrate from your old platform to a new one.
Recently CollabNet migrated 700 live parcel lockers to our platform. The hard requirement from our customer was that their end-customers cannot be impacted and they shouldn’t even notice the process.
And they didn’t.
Here’s how we did it:
1. Parcel Event Synchronization
We sync all parcel events between the old and new systems. Every event in the old system corresponds exactly to the new one, ensuring nothing is lost during the transition. If the previous software sent a notification with a collection code, the end-customer can use that same code on the new system. If their parcel was assigned to compartment 1, it stays in compartment 1—not compartment 3.
2. Configuration Upload
Using our migration tool, customers upload information on their parcels and locker configuration data. This step automatically maps their entire network and parcels to the new software.
3. Door Mapping & New Software Installation
During our migration process, parcels can stay in the lockers. Technicians visit each location to map locker doors and install new software on the locker. Typically the total process at location takes around 15-20 minutes.
4. Cloud Synchronization
The final step. Once everything is configured, the on-site locker and our cloud system recognize each other and merge one-by-one. The locker is now live on the new platform.
Result of the Project
700 lockers migrated. Customers retrieved their parcels without knowing anything changed. No service interruptions.
From our experience, we suggest migrating lockers one-by-one or in batches, not all at once.
